01. Project Description

Music thrives not only above ground but also in subterranean spaces. In recent years, street performances and busking have become defining characteristics of urban environments, playing a crucial yet often undervalued role in shaping cityscapes. As Adam Jonathan notes in Street Music, City Rhythms: The Urban Soundscape as Heard by Street Musicians, "Street music – a conscious deliberate propagation of sound in public space – opens an entryway into comprehending the role of sound in the city, and what it reveals about the city’s inhabitants".

Drawing from this concept, the SoUnder project (short for "sound under") was developed. SoUnder is an interactive mobile app primarily targeting street performers, offering a platform for showcasing their work and inviting users to meet these artists at various subway stations throughout New York City. This project explores the relationship between street performers and one of the world's most renowned metropolises, New York, while also examining the internet as an online public space, and how it can foster mutual growth and exposure between performers and the city.

02. Project Aims

  • Transform the app into an online public space where street performers and musicians can advance their careers and connect with like-minded individuals;

  • Enable users to experience NYC from a distinctive and artistic viewpoint, exploring street performances that pulse through subway stations like blood through veins;

  • Offer a platform for users to communicate and share their favourite buskers with others in the online community;

  • Develop skills in creating and showcasing a mobile app using various design and video production software tools.

03. Design Inspirations

This app embraces a retro and playful design aesthetic, aiming to evoke a nostalgic '90s throwback vibe for users. Some design inspirations include:
